This is ideal for couples who have completed the family and do not wish any more children. It is a very effective form of contraception. It is a one time, permanent procedure. The procedure is relatively easy and without major complications. It has to be done by a skilled doctor, under sterile conditions.
Sterilizations are more cost effective as couples do not require regular contraceptive supplies or check ups reducing the time and money spent on contraceptives.
Consent for surgery should be mutual, truly voluntary and informed.
Eggs are made in a woman’s ovaries. One egg is released each month. It passes through one of the fallopian tubes towards the womb. Sterilization blocks each tube. Pregnancy cannot happen if the sperm cannot reach the egg.
Sterilization is safe and, because it lasts for life, it is simple and convenient.
Many couples say that they have more sexual pleasure because they don’t have to think about unwanted pregnancy anymore.
Sterilization does not change your hormones. The hormones that affect hair, voice, sex drive, muscle tone, and breast size, are still made in the ovaries. Those hormones still flow through the body after sterilization. It will not cause symptoms of menopause or make menopause happen earlier.
After child birth– preferably within 48 hours, but up to 7 days after child birth or any time after 8 weeks of delivery. Sterilization can also be done just after the LSCS procedure
If you are having regular monthly bleeds– Within the first 7 days of menses
Is done under local or general anaesthesia by trained medical doctors under sterile conditions. No need of overnight hospital stay. The procedure will only take about 10 -15 minutes.
This can be done by any of the following methods,
Ligation of the tubes (tying and cutting the tubes)
Ligation and resection of part of the tubes (LRT) (tying and removing a small piece of tube)
Mechanical occlusion (blocking) of the tubes with clips or rings
Mini laparotomy – simple procedure under local or general anaesthesia.
Laporoscopic surgery – under local or general anaesthesia. Needs specially trained doctors. Therefore best carried out in a hospital setting. A small cut is made below the naval.
Although the name sterilization indicates a procedure that is permanent, it can be reversed. But the return to fertility cannot be guaranteed. The reversal surgery is more complicated. Therefore the couple should think very carefully and consider the pros and cons of surgery before embarking on this.
